Kaleidoscopes in the Dark

Short. Readable. Disturbing. The eleven stories in Kaleidoscopes in the Dark paint the more sinister elements of the psyche in technicolour. The collection writhes with black humour, remnants of fairytales and gothic themes.

About the book

A child carefully crawls through a world of plastic waste in search of water but knows she won’t make it if the blood-drinking gulls catch a glimpse of her.

A young woman plots her way onto the latest reality TV programme, where murderers are publicly executed in a manner that mirrors their crimes.

Mice conspire with a seamstress to bring her dead fiancé back to life using an old English tradition.

At 112 pages long and with eleven gothic short stories inside, Kaleidoscopes in the Dark will pull you into strange worlds and have you back before tea-time. In the realm of gothic fiction and dark fantasy, there are twisted fairytales, dystopian futures and our own world with an extra serving of devil’s coach-horse beetles. For fans of Roald Dhal's twisted tales, Angela Carter, Margaret Atwood and the Black Mirror TV series.

About the author

There are two sides to my writing obsession. Welcome to the dark side. The gothic short stories, the quirky poetry and the gateway to a world of creative fiction.

I had my first poem published when I was just nine years old and my passion for creative writing has continued to grow and develop. My stories and creative writing have been published internationally. In 2011, I was a finalist for the Manchester Fiction Prize for my short story ‘The Cuckoo’ and in 2018, I was longlisted for the National Flash Fiction Day prize.

A background in studying literature, children’s literature and fairy tales means I’m well-equipped to help facilitate events on the topic. I’ve assisted in author interviews and writing events, and have run creative writing workshops.

In my spare time, I help to run the Queenstown Creative Writing Group and am a Trustee of the Queenstown Writers Festival.

I love the interplay between different art forms. My poetry has been transformed into visual art and included in a film. I’ve collaborated with filmmakers, actors and musicians and I’m open to whacky, creative ideas.

I’m proud as punch to be a professional member of the New Zealand Society of Authors and I was blown away to be selected as a mentee for 2021. Through this development programme, I completed my first stand-alone collection of short stories called Kaleidoscopes in the Dark.
